Homebirthing in Singapore is more than just possible
We had our second daughter at the 4T in Nov 21 and it was a truly amazing experience. We are from the UK and have been in Singapore for 3 years. My husband and I had tried to have a home birth in the UK in 2017 as it was our preference to have a drug and intervention free, enjoyable birth experience. I always felt my body is designed for this process and wanted to have as natural a bonding experience with the baby as we could. In London we were advised to go into hospital too early and had a difficult time with our first born based on the local hospital induction protocols so it made us happy to find Dr Lai and 4T and learn we could be supported in Singapore with a home birth.
Dr Lai is a fantastic OB-GYN and we trusted his guidance and confidence in the doula's at 4T. The moment I walked into the 4T birth house I felt relaxed and that I was in good hands. I was so happy to have found it I burst into tears! The 4T team are passionate about preparing your body for birth physically and the optimal maternal positioning (OMP) course really made a difference to prepare for a natural birth I felt. It made sense to me to do the pelvic exercises as I spent so much time sitting at a desk for my job. The birth house is very special, the environment is perfect for birthing and the doula team will have thought of everything to take care of you and give you the space you need to labour. My husband and I loved our birth experience at the birth house. I had practiced a lot of hypnobirthing and visualisation and this, with the OMP course, and the doula support helped ensure a better chance of success. Ginny, Chiew Gin and Gem were always there for us particularly in the last few weeks when I had false labour for many days and we just needed to hang in there and be patient as baby would come when ready. Chiew Gin and Gem were so great during the birth, they knew just when to give space and when to step in, what to say and what part of my back to press when things ramped up! The 4T team were also great with my husband.
They involved him equally and encouraged him to be my coach and lead but also helped him throughout. He was daunted the first time that we planned a home birth as there was so much to remember he was sometimes unsure of what physical and emotional support I needed...when to say what and when to press what… but he went into this birth feeling totally confident he could be there for me whilst the doulas gave him help where he needed it. He was also sure they would not forget even the smallest details. He was also able to be present and enjoy the experience which was fantastic. The day came to go to the birth house. We arrived at 10am, listened to music, relaxed, were well nourished with yummy food and I had a great labour. We had calm birth in the birth pool and baby Amber arrived to sounds of Al Green by 10pm accompanied by visits from Dr Lai who helped us deliver. We had beautiful photos thanks to Unison Photo and I used the placenta encapsulation service which was great. I cannot recommend Hui Tse enough for her breastfeeding support postnatally... it was hard for us to get there but with her help and guidance (and some yummy lactation cookies the 4T ladies cook up) we got there. The level of attention and help we got postnatally was fantastic. Hui Tse was there to help me via WhatsApp messages and videos/pictures and they even let me borrow items I needed and helped me find donor breastmilk when it took a while to get my breast milk to fully come in. Don't hesitate to invest in the 4T doula team and their services if you are considering it... just do it. You cannot put a price on making this experience amazing for your baby, yourself and your birth partner. Own your birth experience and make it safe, enjoyable and empowering, you deserve it and the team at 4T really can help you achieve the birth you want and provide you with all the information you need to make decisions right for you whether you birth in your home, their birth house or a hospital.

Homebirthing in Singapore...
What is Homebirthing
Homebirthing is the practice of giving birth in a familiar, comfortable environment—one’s home—instead of a hospital or clinic. This method has gained traction globally among families seeking personalized and natural birth experiences. In Singapore, where maternity care is highly medicalized, homebirthing is a niche but steadily growing choice. https://www.todayonline.com/daily-focus/home-births-beautiful-and-relaxing-experience
If you’re looking for a birthing experience that’s all about YOU—your comfort, your choices, your memories—homebirthing might just be the empowering journey you’re seeking!
The evidence behind homebirthing
Studies indicate that planned homebirths for low-risk pregnancies with skilled birth professional care can be as safe as hospital births. Think about it…Where did we birth before hositals? According to a 2020 systematic review published in The Lancet, outcomes for maternal and neonatal health in planned homebirths were comparable to those of low-risk hospital births under similar care conditions (The Lancet, 2020).

Homebirthing pro’s
Comfort and Familiarity: Birthing at home offers a sense of ease, enabling mothers to labor in their own space, surrounded by loved ones.
Reduced Interventions: Homebirthing is associated with fewer medical interventions, such as epidurals, C-sections, and episiotomies.
Customized Experience: Families have greater control over the birthing environment, including lighting, temperature, and the presence of specific support individuals.
Bonding Opportunity: Immediate skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding initiation are often prioritized.
Challenges to overcome
Limited Emergency Access: In rare but critical complications, the time taken to transfer to a hospital could pose risks.
Resource-Intensive: Homebirths require a significant level of preparation, including hiring experienced birth professionals in your team and arranging necessary medical supplies.
Social Perception: In Singapore, where hospital births are the norm, families opting for homebirths might face skepticism and social pressure.
