The course will cover:

• Birthing Beliefs
  How we see birth today and how that affects the way women birth/birthing attitudes, birth in other cultures, the safety of birth (research based evidence/stats).
  
  
• Pregnancy
  Basic anatomy and physiology, foetal growth and development, prenatal nutrition, routine prenatal care (basic diagnostic tests, what they're for, what's normal, etc.), additional prenatal testing (what they're for, safety issues, informed consent, etc.), emotional and psychological aspects of pregnancy.
  
  
• Anatomy and Physiology of Labour
  Early signs of labour, coping techniques/tricks of the trade.  The role of the Father.
  
  
• Intervention or Interference?
  When intervention is routine and when it is necessary (based on World Health Organization Guidelines), active management, the pros and cons of pharmaceutical pain relief caesarean prevention and planned caesareans, difficult births, complications of labour and birth and how to avoid them/how to assist a client if they should occur, discussing interventions/complications with your client, helping a client create a birth plan and how to communicate it to their caregiver.
  
  
• Doula Skills & Communication
  Practical skills as a Doula and communication skills needed to be an effective Doula.

Four Trimesters will be offering the most comprehensive doula training program in Singapore and workshops will be held in the Asia region starting in the third quarter of 2006.
