Pregnant? How to have a safe AND positive birth - an introduction to Birth Mapping.

Giving birth to a child is one of the most significant events in a person's life. Yet many women would rather forget the experience; they say that they felt out of control, that their wishes were ignored, that nobody explained to them what was happening, that they were not given valuable information and never given options on what they wanted.

There is a small and growing number of women who found their birth experiences positive and empowering. One of their secrets is in the preparation leading up to the birth. At Four Trimesters, we help a couple to plan for their birth using Birth Mapping; a user-friendly way to understanding what is happening to the woman's body, to finding out important information and options, helping with decision making, and enabling such an important event to be a good and memorable one.

What is birth mapping? It is a map of different ways to have your baby, with all the information of regarding each way, so that you can take the road you want, and when you have forks in your road you'll know which one to take because you'll know what each road offers you and the outcomes it delivers. It is YOUR map to your birth. Even if the birth doesn't turn out to be your ideal dream birth, you are still positive about how it went because you were in charge at every decision making point.

A simple analogy of Birth Mapping is to look at a real map. Imagine you are visiting your elderly relatives in Malaysia for the first time in many years. They tell you that it will take ten hours, that the roads are bumpy, you need to bring extra gas, extra food and blankets for the trip just in case, and a radio with batteries. They mention that you should get extra car insurance because there used to be a lot of accidents along the way. You start thinking that there has got to be a better way to get there.

So, you get your map and start looking and see that there are a lot of different ways to get there. There are roads that are completely paved and roads that go by beautiful streams and waterfalls. There are roads that have a lot of historical meaning that you could stop and appreciate. And then, you notice that on every road there are forks that you can take anytime to change the direction or the length of your trip. You notice that you never have to go over that pass that causes so much of the problem. You feel relieved and glad that there are maps to make this trip something to be excited about.
